Outside the wine shop is very chaotic and desperate then turns to gloomy. People are running all about, desperately scrambling to get every drop of wine. Once the wine is gone, the atmosphere turns to gloomy. This gloom is described as more normal the sunshine on the streets. Inside the wine shop, on the other hand, people play games and the atmosphere is a rather eerie serenity. These games and Madame Defarge's subtle signals to Mousier Defarge symbolize behind the scenes control, unnoticed to the common eye but which seemed to be noticed by those inside the wine shop.
